SHAPE SELECT
The Shape Select tool works like the basic Select tool: Draw a box
to select events. Additionally, it provides two shapes to control
which events are included in the selection. The Value shape will accept
or reject events based on their current value (velocity for notes, controller
value for controllers). The Time shape will accept or reject events based
on their location to the bar or beat. By default, both shapes allow all events through,
so the tool is just a standard box select. You can use either shape
alone or both together, which makes it easy to accomplish tasks
like selecting all events with low velocities on the beat.
VALUE SHAPE
The Value shape provides two controls, for adjusting the low and
high cutoff points. As the low cut increases, the values must be higher
to be selected. As the high cut decreases, the values must be lower to
be selected.

notes with varying velocities, all selected |
|
the low cut has been moved to halfway, so any notes below a velocity of 64 aren't selected |
|
the high cut has been decreased, deselecting the louder notes |
TIME SHAPE
The Time shape provides controls for letting you select events based
on their location to the bar and/or beat. it has left and right cut controls
for setting the proximity, and bar mix and beat mix controls to determine whether
the selection is being made based on bar, beat or both. By default, the bar
mix is 0 and the beat mix is 1, meaning that the selection is made based on
the beat. Note that for bar mix and beat mix, only values of 0 or 1 mean
anything -- you're either selecting based on bar/beat or you're not.

the left cut has been moved to halfway -- only events in the right half of each beat are selected |
|
the left cut has been left at halfway, the beat mix is now 0, and the bar mix is now 1 -- only events in the right half of each bar are selected |
FUN WITH SHAPES
Of course, you're not limited to using the default shapes to make the selection.
If you want to specify exactly what gets selected, try using something like the
Sync Stepper for the Time shape: Sync Stepper provides the bar/beat mix controls,
and also lets you draw directly on the shape to set the values. You can use this to select,
say, all events at the beginning, middle and end of each measure.
