INTRODUCTION

The studio is a way to configure your MIDI and audio hardware in Temper. Studio settings are made in the Settings 1 view of appropriate FX: Select an input, output or VST FX and locate the Studio section at the bottom. There are currently two pieces of studio information: A device (described below) and a label.
MIDI output audio output VST
Studio settings apply to all instances of the FX with the given configuration. What this means will vary based on the FX type. For example, studio settings for MIDI input and output will apply to all FX on the given hardware (in this case, a PreSonus FireBox) with the selected channel (or all channels, if the Synchronize all channels box is selected). For audio input and output, the studio applies to the selected channels (i.e. LineIn 34 left and right) for the given hardware. For VSTs, the studio applies to all FX on that VST.

DEVICES

(devices are located in the devices\ folder of your Temper download)

Devices are a way to supply information about an FX. They're used primarily with MIDI input and output FX: A device can be configured with the controller, NRPN, and bank/patch change information necessary for working seamlessly with MIDI hardware.

To assign a device to an FX, click on the FX so its properties appear in the Selection 1 view. Only certain FX can use a device profile: The input and output FX located at the very left and right of each track pipeline, and VST FX. If you've selected an FX that can make use of a device, then the properties will have a section labeled Studio with a menu button that lists all devices installed in the system.

VSTs only use two pieces of device information: The list of controllers, if any, and the icon, if it exists, so you can give each type of VST a unique look in the pipeline.

CUSTOM DEVICES

(custom devices are located in the C:\Documents and Settings\(your account)\My Documents\Angry Red Planet\Temper\devices\ folder)

Since device profiles are human-readable .xml files, you can create custom devices for your own MIDI hardware and VSTs. To get started, navigate to where you installed the main Temper folder and enter the devices\ subfolder. Choose from one of the supplied default devices and copy it to a new location. Most of the format is relatively straightforward but it is all currently undocumented -- feel free to ask questions on our forum or send us email and we'll provide you with any needed details. Once you've made changes appropriate to your device, place the file in the custom devices directory and restart Temper.

One good trick to know concerns the icon used by your device profile: You will see with most of the included factory devices, they have an icon bundled directly into the file in the <icon> tag. To use a custom icon, replace this tag with one that points to your image file:

<icon path="picture.png"> </icon>

The "picture.png" file should be located in the same directory as the device file (or it should be a complete path to the image, i.e. "C:\...\picture.png"). We use .png files as a good compromise of small file, lossless compression, and the ability to do transparency, but using .bmp or .jpg files should work fine.

Whenever you start Temper and it finds a device pointing to a custom image, it will automatically generate a new device (and append "with-icon" to the name) that replaces the path= information with the actual icon, bundled right into the device file just like the factory devices. In this way, if you want to share your device, you don't need to also include the icon, you can just send out the "with-icon" file.
